Wow have we been busy!!! I apologize for updating our site sooner. It has totally escaped me. As you know, our chicks have hatched! It was a small hatch this year, but no less fun for the class. We are thoroughly enjoying watching them grow. Our butterflies have also emerged. Our grass is planted, and we will form our "neighborhood" soon. This is the busiest, but most fun time of the year for me, and the time students remember most as they get older. We are having a lot of fun with the ABC Countdown. We are currently completing our STAR assessment on iPads, and I will begin year end assessments soon. Be sure to check the "Reminders" tab for updated dates and information, as well as the "Pictures" tab for some updated pictures..
Our literacy curriculum is going very well, and we are in more challenging information! The class is doing well identifying our tricky words and sounding out words that are not tricky. I am so excited to see their growth and their confidence. They have also developed nice comprehension skills as we review vocabulary and answer questions about stories read. Our knowledge unit is Colonial America. It is interesting learning about how the colonists lived and compare it to how we live. We made butter, which was delicious!
In Math we focus on composing and decomposing numbers. We have moved through the teen numbers, and are having fun playing more math games with Ms. Burke. We count objects, recognize numbers, and are learning proper number formation in writing. We do several math concepts each day, as we focus on the calendar, how many days we have been in school, how many friends are in attendance, etc. We have begun looking at ten frames, comparing one more/one less, and counting groups of objects. We are in Module 5, which leads into subtraction. Now that we can compose numbers (5+5=10), we are learning to decompose (10-5=5).
In our Second Step curriculum we are learning strategies for how to calm down when we feel uncomfortable or negative emotions. We have started the final unit, How to Solve Problems.
We are working on our iPads a couple times a week. They of course have also been used with Mrs. Bianchi in Technology, as well as a free tech time in class. We will continue to explore the apps and proper etiquette. The class is enjoying Dojo Island, a game that allows them to interact with each other. I am also working with tech to install a few more apps that are helpful. I sent home a sheet with login information for you to be able to access our child's seesaw and see what he/she is doing. You can also "like" their work and leave a comment!
